Why Shopping Online Will Be Big This Holiday Season

Traditionally, the December holiday season is the most important part of the year for many businesses, especially those in retail. But so far, predictions aren’t that rosy for this year’s profits. High gas prices, high cost of living, and low consumer confidence are expected to put a damper on the holiday shopping plans for many.

But that’s not entirely true for everyone. You can expect online shopping to be bigger than ever. Why? Let me outline a few reasons why online retail sites like Amazon, to small home-based operations will be raking in the cash in the weeks ahead.

1. Very few are going to blow off the holidays, even if funds are low. And most people will buy cheaper gifts rather than cross some loved ones off their shopping list. When people don’t have a lot of disposable cash, they look for low prices. Suddenly bargain hunting becomes the order of the day.

Expect masses of North Americans to flock to online retail sites in ever greater numbers. The super-low overhead of online retail allows sites to offer wide selection at the lowest prices on Earth. After a decade of Internet shopping, millions of people are now fully aware of this truth. Expect a very large percentage of them to purchase some or all of their gifts online.

2. Gas is still high and may go even higher in the weeks ahead. This means wading through clogged streets filled with holiday shoppers is something most of our pocket books just don’t want to go through. High gas prices also mean paying for online purchases to be shipped to you is no longer an imposition. Many will be thinking “The 3 bucks for shipping is a lot less than the $20 I’ll spend driving all over town to the malls.”

3. People are working harder than ever. The demands of one, two, even three jobs while taking care of family is leaving millions of Americans will zero free time. This means they need to sandwich holiday shopping into their lunch break or even during a slow period at work. Yes, expect these folks to also do their shopping online in unprecedented numbers.

The bottom line is clear: if you’re a consumer, give yourself a needed break and do your holiday gift buying online. If you’re an online retailer, get ready for a holiday buying season you may not soon forget.

What Causes Holiday Stress?

The holidays are supposed to be a time of celebration when friends and families get together to share food, fun, gifts, and love. They are supposed to be a time of giving, caring and connection when we celebrate important and meaningful events.

Why, then, are they often so stressful and what can we do to make them more fun and peaceful?

Changing the holiday season from stressful to peaceful depends upon one thing: INTENT. Your intent is whatever is most important to you in any particular moment or situation.

At any given moment, we are always in one of two intents. Put in simple terms, it is either more important to you in any given moment to:

1) Be loving to yourself and others, or

2) Get love and approval

Your intent determines your behavior and your feelings. Lets take an example.

Peggy is married with two children. Peggy grew up in a family where she was trained to define her self- worth through others approval that is, Peggy believes that if others value what she does, she is okay, but if they dont, then she is unworthy and unlovable. Therefore, Peggys almost constant intent is to get love and approval. She does this by trying to do everything perfectly the house has to be perfect, the food has to be perfect, she has to get everyone the perfect gifts. She believes that if everything is perfect, she can have control over how others feel about her and she will get the approval she believes she needs to feel worthy.

The problem is that trying to do everything perfectly creates a lot of stress. Whatever means we use whether it be perfection, compliance, anger or blame – we will always be stressed when the intent is to have control over getting love and approval.

Because Peggy does not know how to define her own worth, she feels empty inside until she gets approval. Once she gets the approval, she feels a moment of fullness, which rapidly disappears and then needs to be filled again with more approval. Others around her feel her pull for approval, and may also feel stressed in the face of it. They may like what she does for them, but they may not feel loved by her giving to them to get their approval.

Sophia is also married with children. Sophia also grew up to believe that her worth was based on others approval. However, Sophia has done enough inner emotional and spiritual work to learn to define her own worth. Because she is no longer dependent upon others approval to define her worth, she is free to express herself in ways that are loving to herself and others. Rather than worrying about what anyone will think of her, Sophia joyfully goes about decorating, cooking and buying presents because its fun for her to do so. For Sophia, the holidays are an opportunity to express herself and her love for others. Because she is defining and expressing her own worth, she feels full inside. Approval may be the icing on the cake, but it is not the cake itself.

Because Sophia receives such joy from expressing herself and giving to others without needing anything in return to feel worthy, others feel loved by her giving. While others may be stressed if they are giving to get approval, Sophia herself remains peaceful and joyful.

We all have a choice each moment to decide who we want to be a person who is trying to have control over getting love and approval, or a person who is giving love to ourselves and others. Who we decide to be determines how we feel. If our intent is to get love and approval, then we may think that others determine our feelings, but it is really our own intent that is responsible for how we end up feeling.

Why not start now, before the holidays, noticing your intent? Why not open now to giving yourself the child within you the approval he or she needs to feel worthy? If you start to practice today being in the intent to love yourself and others, perhaps by the time the holidays come around you can really have a good time!

The holidays are upon us

Do difficult relatives ruin your holidays year after year? I had a colleague, Traci, who proclaimed a few weeks before Thanksgiving that the family gathering would be ruined as usual because of her sister-in-law, husband, and meddlesome nephew. She had a defeatist attitude plus she figuratively put on full battle gear ready to go to war with these despicable in-laws.

I reminded her from previous conversations that you cant change the other person, but by changing how you approach this person, you could get a more favorable response. I explained that the minute they walked in the door they would sense her hostility and react accordingly. I suggested that she pretend this is the first time they are meeting. Welcome them into her home and as the hostess, keep the conversation light.

At the same time, she can make wise decisions based on their experience with the misbehaving nephew. She has a right to set boundaries and enforce them if the parents dont. What could she do differently this time since he didnt listen previously to not touch the computer? Traci decided to remove the keyboard from the computer. She also denied him access to the hot tub, which he had damaged the previous year.

I asked Traci why she went along with the suggestion that she have Thanksgiving at her house each year when both she and her husband had to work the day before and after the holiday. Her explanation was that her relatives expected it. Does that mean she is stuck in a rut forever? No! I asked if she had considered going out to dinner. There are plenty of places now where you can have a tasty turkey dinner and more. Traci agreed that the concept sounded like a great solution.

Well, Traci did succeed in letting go of her battle gear and having a good time. The in-laws responded favorably to her relaxed body language, and having to control the obnoxious nephew was much easier because both Traci and her husband enforced the boundaries. They turned a deaf ear to his constant whining.

However, the next year, Traci and her husband decided to recapture the pleasure of the holiday by announcing to the family that they were not going to have Thanksgiving dinner at their house. They were going out to eat. Eventually someone else volunteeredthe in-laws she disliked! All she had to do was bring a dessert. The nephew was happy because he was in his own house and everyone had a good time.

Here are specific examples of how hot buttons are pushed based on the four perceptual styles: Audio, Feeler, Visual, and Wholistic. In each instance the person is operating through his or her Limiting Tendencies rather than Empowering Tendencies. Therefore they are reactive and hope to get a reaction from you. Following each example is a remedy for defusing the situation.

Audio: Uncle Bob is always argumentative. He claims he is just playing the Devils Advocate. But eventually it triggers a shouting match because he is also sarcastic. Uncle Bob wants to evoke a reaction because simmering beneath the surface is anger and hes looking for a way to vent. Once you react, hes won! He now has an excuse to shout to intimidate you. He uses his temper to control others.

Remedy: When you start seeing red, take a deep breath and assess the situation. If you can leave the room, do so to calm down. There is always a reason to go into the kitchen, whether its to check on the food or to get a glass of water. If you feel you would be deserting the guests if you got up and went into the kitchen, change the subject. If appropriate, tell a jokegetting everyone laughing is a great way to defuse the situation.

Feeler: Aunt Jane enjoys being the martyr. The driving force behind her indignation is, After all Ive done for you and this is all the appreciation I get? So she will tell you her tale of woe or all of her worries. Her subconscious goal is for you to feel sorry for her and maybe even wallow with her in her self-pitymisery does love company!

Remedy: Sometimes just quietly listening to her is all she needs. She wants to pour out all her problems and worries. Then steer the conversation to things she has been doing. Sincerely compliment her on her accomplishments, no matter how small. She just wants to feel needed and appreciated. If she offers to help, by all means accept it!

Visual: John is frustrated with his life. Its just not turning out the way he had envisioned it. Subconsciously he wants you to feel as frustrated as he is. He might attack ideas with No, itll never work. Or he might slip into a funk and use the silent treatment: If you dont know whats bothering me, Im not going to tell you. Either of those actions can frustrate you!

Remedy: Realize its a game to control you. Keep that smile on your face when you say, Im really sorry, John, that you arent having a good day. Hope you feel better soon. Then walk away. If its at the dinner table, change the subject or turn your attention to someone else.

Wholistic: For years Chris has expressed resentment that she hasnt gotten her just rewards. She should have gotten that promotion, but then what do you expect? There is a glass ceiling for women! This resentment triggers irritability and moodiness. So sometimes Chris goes off and sulks. With a sour look on her face she withdraws from the others. She secretly likes the thought that others might be wondering whats her problem. Good, let them wonder. When she joins the others for the holiday dinner, she manipulates the conversation so she can impose her opinion about why life isnt fair.

Remedy: Let her sulk. Its not your problem! Otherwise when she becomes negatively opinionated, you can quickly defuse the situation by saying, You are entitled to your opinion. You brought up some points that I will have to think about. End of conversation! Even though you disagree, dont get into an argument with her. You will not win!

If you believe certain relatives will ruin the holiday again because they always do, youre setting yourself up for failure. Youll get what you anticipate. So throw away the battle gear and bring out the good cheer. It is possible to have “Happy Holidays.”

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly Holiday Gifts

Everyone is searching for the perfect gift; however, sometimes, that goes terribly, terribly wrong. Here are some of the best and worst holiday gift ideas.

Good: Giving your mother a gift certificate for a spa is a good gift idea.

Bad: A gift certificate for gym is a bad gift idea.

Ugly: Giving your mother the same crappy gift she gave you last year will get you in BIG trouble!

Reasoning: You should not recycle gifts, because at some point, you may get caught! Not only did the gift obviously lack allure or you would have used it, but you should put more effort into getting things for other people.

Good: If your husband plays golf, buying a set of clubs may be a great idea.

Bad: Buying your husband a vacuum would probably be less impressive.

Ugly: The Flat-D Underwear Fart Filter (yes, there is such a product) is a horrible gift idea, regardless of how useful it may be!

Reasoning: The holidays are not a time to address personal issues, especially not embarrassing ones. Keep your opinions to yourself. If there is a product you think your loved one should know about, mention it some other time. Likewise, hygiene products are bad gift ideas.

Good: Buying your wife a beautiful diamond ring is a wonderful idea!

Bad: Vacuum: still a bad idea, as is cookware, iron/ironing board, or any other product used in the service of others.

Ugly: Buying your wife a ring with your girlfriend’s name engraved in it will get you spending New Year’s with only half of your stuff!

Reasoning: Okay, the girlfriend thing is obvious, but people make the mistake of buying vacuums or other household paraphernalia as gifts all the time. You should give your wife something she can enjoy for herself and that lets her know that she is more than the cook or the maid.

Good: Buying your boss a gift certificate to a nice clothing store will get you another year of employment.

Bad: However, buying “Lies and the Lying Liars That Tell Them” when your boss is a conservative Republican … you should probably start printing out your resume.

Ugly: Tongue Scraper … enough said.

Reasoning: Purchasing a gift that is politically or religiously based, or that is otherwise established on a certain belief system, is a bad idea unless you know the person feels a certain way about that subject. If you are unsure, buy something else!

Good: An engagement ring for your girlfriend of 5 years that wants to get married will provide a joyous occasion.

Bad: An engagement ring for your girlfriend that does not want to get married will make for an uncomfortable Christmas dinner.

Ugly: Giving your girlfriend a McDonald’s gift certificate when she was expecting an engagement ring … you can imagine how well that will go over.

Reasoning: Do not give “obligation gifts” for Christmas, especially if you do not know if they will be a welcomed surprise.

Stay Sane This Holiday Season: 7 Tips To Make Your

Stay Sane This Holiday Season: 7 Tips To Make Your Life Easier

The stress of the impending holiday season is enough to take an experienced host out of their Thanksgiving turkey, tryptophan-induced coma and turn them into a Christmas-crazed, Black Friday maniac. With these seven helpful hints, avoid the fervor of the masses and retain your sanity.

1. Delegate!
Although hosting the perfect holiday celebration may feed your ego, it may also provide you with sleepless nights before the big event. Don’t be afraid to delegate tasks. Send your spouse to the store with a list of last-minute items; have your kids vacuum and clean up around the house. When a guest asks what they can help with or bring, don’t look a gift-horse in their courtesy offer.

2. Watch the clock.
If you know the post office or the grocery store becomes chaotic at 4:30 pm every afternoon, plan your trips accordingly. Avoiding long lines, impossible parking and crazed consumers will help you keep your cool. If you cannot fit these tasks into your schedule at any other time, see tip number one!

3. Check vacation balances at work.
Don’t be afraid to ask a member of management or Human Resources to check your vacation and floating holiday balances. Many companies do not roll vacation balances to the next year; if this time is not taken, it is lost. Use this forgotten vacation time to finish last-minute details and errands.

4. Give your hand a break!
When contemplating all the Christmas cards, holiday invitations and thank-you notes to be written, you may already have a hand cramp. Buy an address stamp for those envelopes or a Seasons Greetings stamp for your correspondences.

5. Stay healthy.
Get eight hours of sleep each night, drink enough fluids and take your vitamins. While you’re busy taking care of guests, family and friends, don’t forget to take care of yourself.

6. Shop online.
Although there’s something immediately gratifying about leaving the store with a fistful of shopping bags, shopping online can eliminate the insanity of the in-store experience. Many online stores offer free shipping, “receive by Christmas” guarantee dates or a huge variety of gift ideas. Shop online and avoid the mob flocking to the local mall.

7. Remember the “reason for the season.”
Instead of allowing the stress and circumstances to overwhelm you, take a moment to reflect on why your family and friends are gathering.

Follow these seven tips this holiday season and watch your tension levels melt away. Dont traumatize yourself by obsessing over unfinished tasks. Thats what family is for.
